Volcano Half Marathon & Fun Run (November 24th 2012)
This annual event is organised by the Montserrat Tourist Board and the Montserrat Running Club in support of Montserrat charities. The first edition was held on December 5th, 2009 and the second edition November 27th, 2010. The strenuous and unique event involves a route that passes some of the key tourism attractions on Montserrat, particularly the active Soufričre Hills Volcano and some of the areas the volcano has impacted.
Points of interest along the route will include the Montserrat Cultural Centre, the entrance to Sir George Martin’s AIR Studios and the Belham River Valley which is covered in volcanic rubble (weather permitting). The course will be a very hilly one with spectacular sea-views all along the way. As well as the 13.1-mile Half-Marathon course, fun runners and walkers will be invited to participate in a section of the route stretching approximately five miles. Water stops will be provided and medical staff will be on hand to assist runners.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the first three male and female finishers of the Volcano Half Marathon. Both the first place female and male runner will each receive EC$1000, EC$750 for finishing second and EC$500 for third. The first youth under the age of 18 years will receive EC$500. In addition, there will now be first, second and third place prizes for the top runners and walkers in the Fun Run-Walk from Cudjoe Head to Salem Park. The first runner and walker to complete the course will each receive EC$200, with EC$150 awarded to second place finishers and EC$100 for third.
Registration for the Half-Marathon costs EC$50 (US$19) for residents and EC$100 (US$38) for non-residents. This includes a race T-shirt, a gift bag with volcano related souvenirs and a race medal produced from volcanic material. There is no entrance fee for Fun Run/Walk Participants.
